Men’s Health Awareness Month in November is an annual observance aimed at raising awareness of preventable health problems and encouraging early detection and treatment of disease among men.
The advocacy campaign gives health care providers the opportunity to partner with companies and individuals to encourage men to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease.
The top 5 Cancers affecting men in South Africa (source: CANSA) are:
• Prostate Cancer
• Colorectal Cancer
• Lung Cancer
• Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
• Melanoma
Most often there are NO symptoms until the disease has advanced. Look out for, and make an appointment with your doctor, if you experience any of the following:
• Straining to pass urine
• Frequent urination especially at night
• Blood in urine/semen
• Painful/burning sensation during urination or ejaculation
• Leaking urination
• Deep pain in lower back, hips or upper thighs
Lower your risk by maintaining a healthy weight and diet, avoid smoking, do not use steroids, and keep your alcohol intake to a minimum.
Thank you Strandfoam!
We recently had the honour of visiting Strandfoam to thank them for raising awareness of Men’s Health Issues amongst their staff. Every year their staff are encouraged to participate in their Men’s Cancer campaign, which not only raises funds for Helderberg Hospice but also raises awareness within their communities.
Strandfoam is also a much-valued Friend of Helderberg Hospice who make an annual CSI donation. This partnership helps to support the specialised palliative care we provide to all within the Helderberg community.
When we visited, the ladies were all dressed in pink, supporting women’s cancers in solidarity with the men. Cupcakes and chocolates were given to all the management staff to say thank you Strandfoam for all you do – we appreciate you!
If you or a company you know is interested in partnering with us to become the hands that care, please refer to our CSR Page.
