For the past 36 years, Helderberg Hospice has established itself as a beacon of hope and compassion for individuals in the Helderberg community who are confronting a life-limiting illness. Our purpose is simple yet profound: to facilitate quality of life and alleviate suffering within our community so that people experience peace, comfort, and dignity when it matters most.
We believe that in the face of adversity, no one should walk alone. That’s why community support plays a vital role in our ability to deliver the highest quality palliative care to our patients and their families. It is through the kindness, generosity, and the solidarity of individuals like you that we make a meaningful difference in our community.
When life takes an unexpected turn and individuals are faced with a life-limiting illness, our dedicated team of healthcare professionals’ step forward, providing unwavering support and expertise. But they cannot do this alone.
Community support is the lifeblood of our organisation, enabling us to provide holistic palliative care and create a nurturing environment for those we serve. Whether it is through financial contributions, in-kind donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness about our mission, each act of support this Mandela Day will have a profound impact on the lives of our patients and their loved ones.
As we embark on Mandela Day 2023, we invite you to partner with us in strengthening access to compassionate palliative care. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those facing life-threatening illnesses. Your support is not just an investment in healthcare; it is an investment in humanity, love, and hope.
2023 Mandela Day Needs
Garden of Remembrance Upgrade
Imagine stepping into a garden that radiates tranquility and serenity, providing solace amidst life’s greatest challenges. At Helderberg Hospice, we recognize the profound impact of a peaceful environment on the emotional well-being of our patients and their families. That’s why we are reaching out to you, our compassionate community, to emphasize the critical need for improvements in our Garden of Remembrance.
As a haven of respite and reflection, our Garden of Remembrance holds immense significance for those in our care. It is a place where patients and their families find solace, a sanctuary where they can retreat from the overwhelming emotions that often accompany life-threatening illnesses. However, to fully serve its purpose, this sacred space requires enhancements that will elevate its healing power.
One of our primary goals for the 2023 Mandela Day campaign is to address these needs and transform the Garden of Remembrance into a haven of tranquility.
Paving, JoJo tanks, and other essential garden items are integral to achieving this vision. Paving will provide ease of access, ensuring that individuals with limited mobility can fully experience the garden’s serenity. JoJo tanks will ensure a sustainable water supply, allowing us to maintain the garden’s lush greenery even during dry seasons. Additionally, other garden items will contribute to the aesthetics and functionality, creating an inviting and peaceful atmosphere.

The impact of these enhancements extends far beyond the physical realm. By improving the Garden of Remembrance, we are nurturing the emotional well-being of our patients and their families. The soothing environment will offer a sanctuary for therapeutic healing, providing a space where individuals can find solace, reflect on cherished memories, and draw strength during difficult times. It is in this tranquil haven that hearts can find healing and minds can experience moments of respite from the burdens they carry.
Patient Room and Ward Upgrade
Within the walls of our 24-hour Support Centre, we provide a haven of comfort and care for our patients during their stay. We understand the significance of a healing environment, and that a patient’s room is not merely a space for medical care; it is their sanctuary, a place where they find solace and healing. Comfortable and well-designed ward rooms play a crucial role in nurturing the physical and emotional well-being of our patients. It is within these spaces that they find respite, support, and a sense of belonging.
To truly enhance the healing experience, regular and specific upgrades are required. Painting the walls with soothing colours can create a calming atmosphere, easing anxieties and promoting relaxation. Furniture enhancements, such as comfortable beds, chairs, and storage solutions, contribute to the overall comfort and functionality of the rooms. By creating a warm and welcoming ambiance, we empower our patients to focus on their well-being and find peace in their surroundings.
The impact of these upgrades is immeasurable, as they directly influence the healing journey of our patients. We have witnessed the transformative power of a well-designed and upgraded room through the stories and testimonials of those who have experienced its effects first-hand.
One patient spoke of how the serene colours and comfortable furniture in their room helped alleviate their anxiety, allowing them to rest and recover more peacefully. Another patient shared how the upgraded room fostered a sense of dignity and normalcy during their stay, positively impacting their mental and emotional well-being.

These stories are testaments to the significance of thoughtful ward upgrades. Each brushstroke of paint, each carefully chosen piece of furniture contributes to creating an environment that uplifts spirits, eases burdens, and promotes healing.
