Wolf Kreft from Hyundai Somerset West shares why he supports Helderberg Hospice
The reason why I got involved with Helderberg Hospice is that they set an example in terms of their ethics and the way they conduct themselves. Contrary to most people nowadays, they set a very high standard. I would like that example to be set for the younger generation.
The Helderberg Hospice staff exhibit kindness, compassion, civility, and decency – all those inherent qualities that people get brought up with but are sometimes lacking. The people involved in Helderberg Hospice, exhibit them on a daily basis.
In 2010, my late stepfather was admitted to Helderberg Hospice – needless to say Hospice saved us. As three brothers, we didn’t know what to do and between the three of us we were clueless. We always ‘think’ we’ll know what to do, until it happens.
The oncologist suggested referring us to Helderberg Hospice. I was astounded by the care, compassion and service we received. After three days, our stepfather decided he wanted to be at home. Hospice helped us with everything. They referred us to a live-in nursing service, whilst they continued to make home visits in Gordon’s Bay to attend to his palliative care needs. This was a very stressful period witnessing someone so sick from pancreatic cancer.
My interaction with hospice over this period, built an absolute level of trust in the organisation. With interactions all the time, these people really add value, making a difference that you can feel. A feeling of “don’t worry, we’ve got you and your family” – we felt supported.
It’s a true skill, to assist a family in their deepest crisis, imparting wisdom and knowledge which we’ll carry with us for the rest of our lives.
I support Helderberg Hospice and give with absolute conviction, knowing that they’ll use the money for the purpose it’s intended.
My business is the main sponsor to the annual Cycling for Life fundraising event. And I really encourage other businesses to also get involved.
It’s such a happy event, celebrating life, going beyond ourselves for someone else. A rewarding experience, from start to finish.
