Caring at home for loved ones is ‘unconditional love’ in its highest form, but it takes its toll.
Joy is one of these special people who cares for her 76 year old husband who has cancer and had two strokes, and their son who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.
One of the services offered at Helderberg Hospice is respite care. If recommended by the Homecare Sister and if space is available patients can be accommodated for up to 14 days. Patients are accommodated in our 24 Hour Support Centre for two weeks in order to give their caregivers some time to rest and build up reserves.
When Pieter and Ricky come to us, they enjoy being able to be together in a shared room. This is also a pleasant change of scene for them, looking out over our lovely garden, and interacting with different people.
Our 24 Hour Support Centre is just like being at home. It’s welcoming and comfortable with a peaceful atmosphere. And the respite period also provides the opportunity for us to address any new problems or issues that a patient may be experiencing.
You may be surprised to know that Hospice care isn’t only for patients with cancer. We regularly help with other illnesses that can’t be cured – these include organ failure, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s, and chronic Obstructive Airways conditions, e.g. Emphysema.
You may also be surprised to know that respite care costs R1 851/day. Just one more reason why any contribution that you can make is so important.
