Take a Facebook group of people intent on changing their world for the better, add a disco ball, coloured lights, memory-making music – and what do you have? The Somerset 1 80’s Party to raise funds for Helderberg Hospice.
This party-with-a-purpose came from a vote on the Somerset 1 Facebook page to give concerted support for this year to one Somerset West charity, to make a real difference to the service of that organization. Helderberg Hospice was the charity of choice and the 80’s party was held specifically to equip the newly renovated kitchen at Hospice House. Offers of sponsorship came from all quarters of the group, from design and printing of advertising posters to donation of prizes, photography and VIP catering for the evening.
Star Bar in Somerset West gave the use of their venue and DJ Squeak, an 80’s icon from the Cape Town club scene, pulled out all the good vibes from that era to make the dance floor pump. The crowd came dressed in their 80’s best and turned back time as they remembered the moves – and the lyrics – from that colourful decade. Donations are still being tallied but a remarkable R24 000 has already been banked and a new fridge and stove have been installed to the benefit of the Hospice patients.
Helderberg Hospice would like to thank the many individuals and local businesses who supported and sponsored this event. This kind of community support is what makes it possible for Hospice to serve all in the Helderberg who need their special care.
